Schenck High School Newsletter March 2008 A Note from the Principal Dear Parents,As the 3rd quarter ends and we begin the final quarter of the school year, I think that we’re all thinking of warmer weather and no snow! We are looking forward to the start of spring sports and we are hoping we can be on the fields and courts in time for games. This will become a very busy time for our students, especially seniors as they make their final decisions on post secondary options. Underclassmen are also signing up for next year’s classes. Please feel free to contact the guidance office if you have questions or concerns. We do have available online Advanced Placement and college courses in some content areas for students who would do well with this type of rigorous, independent study. The state mandated SAT exam is scheduled for May 3rd for all Juniors. This is a Saturday and students can sign up in the office for transportation on that day, if needed. We will also be conducting an augmentation piece of this exam, during the school day, on April 1st. Once again, the augmentation piece and the May 3rd exam are mandatory and we need to have all students attend and do as well as they possibly can. This is a test that costs other students outside of Maine $42 and is used for college admission. Yet for Maine students it is free and is a great opportunity for students who will later apply to college. I had the opportunity to see the middle school and high school show choir and jazz choir perform on Thursday and they were terrific! I am sure that they will do well at their state performances this weekend. Congratulations also to our Math Team for placing 3rd in Class C for Eastern Maine! Once again, the spring is fast approaching (even though the weather doesn’t show it!), and it will be a busy time. Therefore, please make sure that your student is keeping up with the coursework and don’t hesitate to call teachers or the main office with your questions. Students need to realize that even though the end of the school year is coming, there is still a great deal of coursework to cover and to complete, which if undone, can greatly impact scores. The student with the consistent work ethic will maintain averages better than the student with the up/down approach to grades. Sincerely,Pamela Hamilton, Principal
Congratulations to Melissa Davis for receiving this year's 2008 Principal's Award. This award is sponsored by the Maine Principal's Association, and is given in recognition of a high school senior's academic achievement and citizenship. Class of 2008 Winter Carnival Candidates
Foreign Language The Schenck Foreign Language Club went to the University of Maine on March 18, 2008 to the Aquila Theater production of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Some familiar lines were "Et tu, Brute?" and "Friends, Romans, Countrymen, Lend me your ears!" Art Exhibit The following students were included in Our Student's Art Exhibit shown at the Bangor Mall; Grade 12; Eric Tompkins, Steven Deveau, Tricia Hobbs, Victoria Fiske, Zachary Waite, Grade 11; Ben LeClerc, Grade 10; Amber Bouchard, Josh Fritch, Leann Toothaker, Grade 9; Brandon Theriault, Jamie Long and Juanita Currie. Juanita Currie and Jamie Long were selected to represent our school in a state wide art exhibition. SAT Prep We have provided two links on our homepage for students to help them prepare for the SATs. Starting in February, PrepMe will be providing the Gold Package of it's SAT Preparation Course to every 11th grader in a public school in the State of Maine at no cost to parents, students, their schools, or taxpayers. Every student will receive their own personal login user name and password through their English classes.
The College Board has also provided various programs to help students prepare for the SATs. Students have the opportunity to take an official SAT practice test and review their scores with answer explanations. Students will know what to expect on test day by reviewing practice questions, taking a practice test, and much more.
