Special Education Referral Process
-
A student is referred to a PET (Pupil Evaluation Team)
-
They determine if the student has a disability that adversely effects the student's
performance. If the determination is YES, the student is eligible for special education under IDEA.
-
The student then has the right to an education designed to enable the student to obtain a level of success.
-
The PET designs a set of specific written instructions and related services for that student. This becomes that
student's I.E.P. (Individual Educational Plan)
Determination of 504 Eligibility
-
Does the student have a disability that substantially limits one or more major life
activities.
-
If the determination is YES, the student is eligible for protection under the 504 Rule. The student then has the right to an education that is equal to one provided for students without disabilities.
-
Reasonable accommodations must be provided in physical and instructional settings.
-
Specialized education, aides and services are created in the specific student's I.A.P. (Individualized
Accommodation Plan)
